Desert Yoga

This year the plan was to get a good chunk of miles in outside.  We live in snowy Alberta now, so that meant travelling south for winter.  The main goal of my day is to get the prescribed miles in on the bike but after that we get to explore all these beautiful places!  Part of my personal approach to training and resting and increasing my happy endorphins include wrapping myself up and stretching myself out in yoga poses.  I would like to share some amazing Californian desert yoga shots that my husband, Alex Jackson, took of me featuring my partnered brand myinnerfire.  Myinnerfire is a local Vancouver-made brand that creates fantastically fun leggings, shorts, shirts and sweatshirts - and get this, the fabric they use is made out of recycled water bottles!!  Check their store out online at myinnerfire.com and use the code ‘ AlisonJ ‘ to get 15% off your order!

Off-season 2015

It’s over???  I can hardly believe it. Is my first real season of bike racing over?  Can I really sleep in and go camping for a few days without bringing my bike along?  Yes…but not really: Yes, it is the off-season but my off-season looks like full-time farming on my parent’s grain and bison farm.  I’ve switched from riding bikes to driving tractors, eating bison steak and stealing seconds of my mom’s fresh cinnamon buns!

All the time spent in the tractor (today I was baling straw) has allowed me to reflect on this past year.  It has been an amazing year of bike racing and exploring professional cycling.  I have far and beyond exceeded my expectations for the year.  I had four major goals: improve my bike handling (and learn how to catwalk my bike), be top 5 at Nationals, be involved in a National Team project, and learn how to motivate my team.  Alex (my hubby) taught me how to catwalk, I won the Canadian National Criterium Championship race, I was involved in 4 National Team projects with the finale being World Championships, and worked with gems for teammates.

As for the race reports:

Belgium – I did my first European race tour with Canada at the beginning on August.  My time there I personally used as a sprint camp.  I sprinted for every preme and took a few wins at the end too.  European racing has a huge following in Belgium and the crowds that we raced for pumped me up!  These local races often had 80 girls lined up at the start – I dream of the day that it is like that in Canada!!  One race that we did started with a 70km kermesse, or short circuit race, where the top 20 were started in a second race that was organized as an elimination race.  Cones were placed 500m apart and the last one across the line was out until only 1 remained.  After two stressful eliminations I attacked and stayed away solo to take the 1000euro prize (and a beautiful bouquet of flowers of course) for the team.

France – It was only 2 weeks after returning home from Belgium that I got back on an international flight to Lyon, France for more racing (I had to come back for a TTT camp in between).  I flew with my trade team TWENTY16 p/b Sho-Air for the 6 day stage race of TCIFA (Tour de Cycliste International Feminin de L’Ardeche).  We traveled with our director Mari, but had no mechanic, no soigneur and no control over where we stayed or what we would find when we got there.  When we arrived we were greeted so warmly by the race organizers and were found everything we needed by the help of so many of the other teams and racers.  The racing there was like nothing I had ever experienced.  The climbs were steep and kept coming and the descents were fast, technical and on narrow roads.  I sprinted every day to earn the red sprinters jersey and held off some very tough, experienced riders to win the jersey each stage and at the finale.  I ate more crostinis, pizzas, waffles, and baguettes than I ever have – ever!

Richmond, Virginia – 2015 Cycling World Championships – I was entered in two races at this event.  My trade team selected me to race the TTT and Canada selected me to race the road race.  For me this was an honour that recognized where I came from and the hard work that got me the results I’ve had throughout the season.  World Championships would be the biggest and hardest event that I had ever participated in to date.  Our team came in 5th in the TTT as the top North American team and I rode to a solid 36th place in my first every Road World Championships.  I loved it! I loved the excitement and the intensity.  I loved that people cheered so loud that you forgot there was a helicopter filming you from above.  I loved wearing the maple leaf and riding into one of Canada’s best ever showings at a World Championships.

Now it is time for the off-season – which is something I have never had!  When I was a triathlete I was also a cross-country runner for my university, a swimmer in an elite swim club, and a club cyclist.  One season would end just for the next sport to start up and I never missed a beat.  On my wedding day I went for a run in the morning and raced a triathlon in the middle of our honeymoon while on Christmas Day I spent the afternoon on cross-country skis! I am taking professional cycling seriously and I want to build into this next season from a solid and rested start.  During this time I am reflecting on 2015 and setting goals for 2016, 2017 and 2020.  This first year was big, but I think there is a lot more to squeeze me.

Canadian XC Club Nationals - 2013

Picture by Rita Ivanauskas...Do I need to circle my face?
Ze last and final race of the 2013 cross-country calendar: Canadian Nationals at wet, muddy Jericho Beach!

We have had the most amazing fall here in the Lower Mainland this year because there has been only a handful of miserably wet and rainy days.  However one of those wet, rainy, windy, cold days was this past Saturday for the races.  No person (not even spectators) left that course without mud coated shoes and a soaked jacket.  At least us runners got to run and keep warm compared to spectators...but at least the spectators could wear clothes and have umbrellas to keep somewhat dry and warm.

We were looking for a strong and steady performance by me and that is what we got.  Nothing too exciting or spectacular out of me but nothing less than expected: 14th place is an improvement from last year's 22nd.  I was running a bit stiff and flat (I couldn't get my upper body to relax), while I did good not to get stressed out by the lack of footing because of the mud.  I had a bit left over in the tank as we came around the final straight-away suggesting that I could have moved up a few spots if I kicked earlier.  Anyway, I was stoked to be running for Team BC this year (my first time), and as a team we took second as a regional team. <<insert> pat-on-the-back>  Of course on my team were the the 1st and 2nd place winners!  At the awards it was fun to mingle with the other races, pass out congratulations and giggle at everyone's excitement for the after party :)

Finally my hubby came to watch a race which was wonderful!  Nothing like a muddy, wet, cold race to encourage your family to become regular race spectators...err, yeah.

I can't thank TWU and Coach Bomba enough for the opportunity given to me to learn and run and run well and to be believed in as a person pursing education, high-level athletics, and being a kind, peaceful, loving person.  I pray it may all continue for looooong time.

3 X Summer Swim Weekends

Throughout the summer I am lucky enough to have the opportunity to train one-on-one with Denise Totman, a lovely coach with the Lloydminster Rebels swim club.  Once I expressed my interest in doing some swim races in efforts to reach TriathlonBC and TriathlonCanada's swim standards`for elite funding and Provincial/National triathlon teams, she promptly had me registered!

In combination with my existing race schedule, we had me entered in 3 back-to-back-to-back weekends of in the pool swim races.  With a goal in mind pool training took on a freshness to train hard, which came at just the right time!

Dreaming, setting goals and making a plan to get there is always a huge motivating factor for me.

I got to swim a few different races that included the 50 FLY and the 200 IM along with many FREESTYLE races :)  It was a confidence booster for me to see that with every weekend, and each bit of tweaking of skills came faster times and renewed my hope that IT IS POSSIBLE!  I'm still behind but Praise God! I see that I am getting faster!

100 FR: 1:12.64/1:10.0 (2.64sec) ----> I had a previous best time of 1:14
1500 FR: 22:03.20/20:00 (2:03min) ----> First time for a 1500m pool swim

We are really trying to work on getting my arms to move faster and finishing my stroke.  Here is an example of a 3000m speed workout taken from Dave Salo a swim coach from the states:

WU: 1000m+
MS: 10 x [6x25m SPRINT! w/ or w/o fins in :45;
150m broken no fins (:10) on 200m race pace in 3:00]
CD: 200m+

How many can you do?

Edmonton ITU 2013

Today I get to post epic pictures because I had my main man and media guy cheering me on at this race.

It was a beautiful sunny day.

I was well rested and trained up.

No flats.  No crashes. Always a few blisters.  Great competition.  Carefully organized course.

And…

I won!  I won with an overall personal best and PB’s in all of my splits!  Finally! Thank you, Lord.  1st in the Collegiate Championship division for my university Trinity Western, and 1st overall female!

Total time: 2:06:53.9
Swim: 22:24.7 (my fastest time yet, but looking for a sub 21:00)
Bike: 1:04:17.6 (with hills!)
Run: 37.09.8 (so happy with this time! I’ve known for a while now that I should be able to run a 37:00 or less at the end of a triathlon and finally! Finally! It’s here.)

The next closest female clocked in at a 2:14- (+9min) and I wouldn’t have ended anything less than 5th place in any male category.  I hope this shows TriCanada that Jackson CAN race elite World Cups!!!  It was tough watching the women’s elite race later in the afternoon because, although I would have been last out of the water, I would have very well passed the stragglers on the bike AND caught the trail pack and….and…who KNOWS what would have happened!  I had to keep reminding myself that I am very happy with my age group overall win and more than that the great time I was able to produce.

Thank you so much to my amazing fan squad: my hubby Alex, Ma & Pa Farkash, my broskie Nathan and miss Terri, Denise Totman my friend and swim butt-kicker ;) and of course the AIA Triathlon team who you could find on every corner of that race course it seemed!!!

ACTIONjackson is very blessed!

Happy to Take the Pain

Sunday was Vancouver’s infamous Sun Run.  This race is many different things to different people: a social event, the end-goal to a fitness plan, an opportunity to claim participation in 10K of the well-known race, or a chance to better one’s 10K time.

This was my chance to better my 10K time.

Two years ago I raced the Sun Run as an elite to pull through in 39:14.  Last year I only ran 10K in triathlon races for a best time of 39:10.  This year I am proud to nail a sub 36min 10K – 35:56.

Thank you to Coach Bomba, my mother-in-law and hubby-wubby who came to the race.

It was really fun being a VIP elite for the day.  My elite race number got us everywhere fast and with lots of good food!
My teammate Joel DeSchiffart and I post-race (I promise I am wearing shorts...)

Indoors & Around In Circles

Fiona is scary.
I have a race coming up.
Oh, it's a triathlon.
No, actually it's a track race, and indoor track race.
Ooooh...wait, running or cycling?
Okay, I have an indoor track running race - it's a 3K.
Are you still talking cycling?

Boy, this could get confusing :) but I don't really mind.  I love it all!

At the beginning of January, I made the goal to swim 6 x a week for the next 18 months to see if my swim could improve enough to take me competitively through elite triathlon racing.  I also made goals to do more pure cycling races.  I was going to swim and cycle hard right through the hard indoor season (running) without a worry of what it might do to my running performances because track races aren't as much my thing as cross country running.  This has taken a lot of pressure off of me to perform.
1st at Harry Jerome Indoor Meet

Then, with the long socks on, I drop my personal best times in the 1500m and 3000m 7 and 17 sec!  Whew!  Now, I am ranked 8th in Canada for the 3000m which could take me to Nationals and my 1500m is in the running for an explosion into Nationals as well.  So, now I am thinking about Nationals...hmmm...

The training we are doing at TWU is making me stronger and ready to handle harder workouts and my body has adapted really well to the stresses of training three sports together.

Anyway, we will see :)
Win or Lose.  Praise God.

P.S. This is me at the Burnaby Velodrome this February for the first fun time :)

It's A BIG World!

What an AMAZING blessing to get to compete at the 2012 Triathlon World Championships in Auckland, New Zealand!  I give it a ‘whoop whoop!’
'Sola Cafe' and 'Ben' - favorite coffee stops

The food is YUM.
The coffee is excellent.
The people are ‘Sweet As’.

The race was a good race for me too.  The day was the right temperature, although a bit windy that got stronger as the race went on.

Swim time 24:52.  That is not my best this year but this swim was different.  My best time this year was in a ‘lake’ on a calm day – NZ had wind and waves and a current and tide.  28th out of the water.

Bike time 1:10:39.  This is a grrrREAT bike time and we had wind and hills! 5th fastest bike time.

Run time 39:52.  Hmm…definitely NOT my best run time.  I was looking for a sub 38min 10K time.  Did I give it all on the bike?  The run was a flat course with a lot of change of surface to run on, and the wind.  At any rate it was still 4th fastest run time in my age group (1st girl was at a 35min and change!).

Next Year World Championships will be held in London, UK.  All the podium spots were taken mainly by Kiwis’, Aussies and Team GB.  New Zealand hosted tough competition and I expect London to do the same.  What is better than 11th?  FIRST!
